Understanding Link Tracking

Overview

Every time someone scans one of your dynamic QR codes, QR Dex automatically records a set of data points about that scan. This information powers the analytics dashboard and helps you understand how, where, and when people interact with your codes. Tracking is built into the redirect layer that makes dynamic QR codes work, so there is nothing extra to configure -- it happens automatically.

What Data Is Captured

When a person scans a dynamic QR code, the request passes through the QR Dex redirect server on its way to your destination URL. During that brief redirect, the following information is recorded:

  • Timestamp -- The exact date and time of the scan, stored in UTC.
  • Approximate location -- The city and country of the scanner, derived from their IP address.
  • Device type -- Whether the scan came from a mobile phone, tablet, or desktop computer.
  • Operating system -- The platform used by the scanner, such as iOS, Android, Windows, or macOS.
  • Browser or app -- The application that processed the scan, such as Safari, Chrome, or a native camera app.

Together, these data points give you a detailed picture of your audience without requiring any personally identifiable information.

Privacy and Compliance

QR Dex is designed with privacy in mind. All scan data is anonymized -- no personal information such as names, email addresses, or exact GPS coordinates is ever collected or stored. IP addresses are used only to determine approximate geographic location and are not retained in raw form. This approach keeps your tracking fully compliant with GDPR and other major data-protection regulations.

Static vs Dynamic: Why It Matters

Scan tracking is available only for dynamic QR codes. Static QR codes encode the destination URL directly in the code pattern itself, which means the scanner's device navigates straight to the target without passing through any intermediary server. Because there is no redirect step, there is no opportunity to record scan data. If tracking is important to your use case, always choose the dynamic option when creating your code.

Where to View Your Data

All captured scan data is available in the QR Dex analytics dashboard. Navigate to Analytics in the main navigation to see an overview of all your codes, or click into an individual QR code to view its specific scan history. You can filter by date range, location, and device type to focus on the metrics that matter most to you.
